Burwash Equine Services is locally owned and operated, and has been for almost fifty years. We are committed to offering a spectrum of care, to doing what is best for both you and your horse, and to making the veterinary profession the best it can be. We are always there when you need us the most, and take a lot of pride in our 24/7 emergency availability. More than anything, we care - about quality medicine, about collaboration, and about being your partner in equine health and performance for many years to come.
OUR FACILITIES
Our 16000 square foot hospital was built in 2018. It is equipped with three exam rooms, a full surgery suite, isolation facilities, a reproduction lab, camera-equipped ICU stalls, and large foaling stalls. Our surgery suite has a client viewing room, and our recovery stalls have a rope recovery system that allows safe assisted recoveries. We also have fully equipped vehicles to allow quality ambulatory care. If you’re in the area, feel free to stop by for a tour!
OUR HISTORY
Dr. Wayne Burwash founded the practice in 1977. The original clinic building was on his land in Springbank. Dr. Burwash was one of the forerunners in advanced equine reproductive work in Canada. Dr. Kirby Penttila purchased the practice from Dr. Burwash in 2013, and Dr. Crystal Lee became a partner in the practice in 2017. Over the years, the focus of the practice has shifted to include all aspects of veterinary care for our patients. The practice moved to the new location just south of Cochrane in 2018.
REFERRAL HOSPITAL
We are proud to offer referral services for veterinarians across western Canada. This includes surgery, internal medicine, and ophthalmology services by boarded specialists, advanced podiatry and advanced dentistry work, sports medicine referrals, and intensive care. We feel fortunate to work with a large network of veterinarians to allow them to provide more advanced care for their patients when needed. During these cases, we work collaboratively with your veterinarian to provide the needed care for you and your horse.
COMMITMENT TO TEACHING
Burwash Equine has a passion for teaching, and this has always been a focus of our practice. We have an internationally respected internship program that provides advanced training for two graduate veterinarians each year, and we provide clinical training for vet students from across North America. As well, we host the annual Spotlight: Equine Vet Practice in Canada event, bringing vet students and vet tech students from across Canada for labs and lectures to highlight the positives of a career in equine practice.
COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT
We love having the opportunity to be involved in our local horse community! We are annual sponsors of the Cochrane Rodeo and the Cochrane Light Up, and provide the cross country finish vet check at the Cochrane Horse Trials. We are proud to sponsor the Pro Rodeo Canada Cowgirl of the Year award. We also sponsor individual equestrians who are passionate about their discipline and about providing exemplary care for their athletes.
